Course Name:Operate a pole saw
Description:

This course provides participants with relevant and comprehensive training in order to equip those participating with the skills and knowledge to operate a pole saw, carry out pre-start and post-start checks of a pole saw and use basic pole saw cutting techniques in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety legislative requirements and standards.

Topics covered in this course:
  • OH&S procedures, practices, policies and precautions are observed and followed
  • PPE is used in accordance with OH&S requirements
  • Pole saw design, components, maintenance and chain sharpening
  • Start up and shut down procedures
  • Identifying trimming requirements
  • Assessing trees for trimming
  • Selection of appropriate equipment in accordance with safety and maintenance requirements and equipment is checked for serviceability
  • Trimming of branches, burls and other small growths at a height requiring the use of a pole saw
  • Keepping work area clear of fallen branches
  • Maintaining a safe working distance from other personnel
  • Identifying trees unsafe for cutting and referring to others
  • Maintaining communication with supervisor and other workers
  • Identifying kickback and precautions

Duration:1 day
Prerequisites:Participants will need to meet the age requirements as stated in relevant Government regulations or industrial awards, and will need to demonstrate the physical and psychological capacity to manipulate a pole saw.
Qualification:Statement of Attainment
Outcomes:On completion of this unit, participants are able to trim high branches, reachable with a mechanical pole saw to trim excess branches promoting tree growth. They will also be able to carry out equipment maintenance.
Notes:All training aids including pole saws and safety equipment will be provided for use as required. Suitable timber is required for the practical component of the course. Participants are required to wear/bring their own steel capped boots.
